The Texas Medical Association is proud to offer scholarship programs for qualified Texas medical students.

 

Texas Medical Association Diversity in Medicine Scholarship (Formerly TMA Minority Scholarship)

2024 Scholarship applications accepted July 1, 2023 - May 31, 2024 for medical students entering their first year in Fall 2024.

This $10,000 scholarship is for minorities historically  underrepresented  in Texas medical schools and the state’s physician workforce.  One scholarship available at each Texas medical school.

  • Eligible applicants must be African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, or Native American (includes American Indian/Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander).
  • Available to US citizens.
  • Students already attending medical school are not eligible.  (Scholarship is for those who have been accepted for admission in the fall of the award year.)  
  • Must complete an application via the link below (online only).  
  • Provide a letter or email confirming acceptance offer and intent to attend.
  • Write an essay, not to exceed 750 words, explaining how as a physician you would “improve the health of all Texans”.
  • Fundraising efforts handled by TMA Foundation.
  • Funds will be disbursed directly to the school in increments of $2,500 annually during the first four consecutive years of a student's matriculation. Students who withdraw or take leaves of absence will automatically forfeit the remainder of their disbursement.
  • This scholarship is per school and does not transfer with a student should they decide to matriculate elsewhere.

Texas Medical Association 50-Year Club Scholarship

 Scholarships available each Summer for Fall.

  • Available to all accredited Texas medical schools.
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be in the second, third, or fourth year of medical school study.
  • Displays outstanding academic progress in medical school and exhibit financial need.
  • Must complete online application ( when available).
  • Awardees must submit a headshot, and a letter to TMA acknowledging receipt of this award and state how the scholarship will benefit the student.
  • Funding available through the 50-Year Club.
  • Awards are to be issued in increments of no less than $500 per medical student.

Harris County Medical Society Alliance Scholarship

Scholarships available each Fall - Medical schools determine the recipients.

  • Available to Baylor College of Medicine, The University of Texas John P. and Katherine G. McGovern Medical School, and University of Houston College of Medicine.
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Attend an accredited medical school in Harris County or reside in Harris County for one year or more prior to attending an accredited medical school out of Harris County.
  • Be in the third or fourth year of medical school.
  • Must be progressing satisfactorily in medical school.
  • The medical school determines recipients and notifies TMA.
  • Funding available through the Harris County Medical Society Alliance.
  • Awards are to be issued in increments of no less than $500 per medical student.

Krishna Memorial Scholarship

Scholarships available each Summer for Fall - Medical schools determine the recipients.

  • Available to The University of Texas System medical schools.
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
  • Be in the second, third, or fourth year of medical school.
  • Must display unusual ability, scholarship, and medical aptitude, with financial need of secondary importance.
  • Preference given to those who do not qualify for financial assistance grants and scholarships based on need.
  • The medical school determines recipients and notifies TMA.
  • One student receives the scholarship each year (does not renew throughout a student's studies).
  • Awards are $1,000 per UT System medical school annually.

Lone Star Caucus Medical Student Scholarship

Scholarship each spring dependent upon availability of funds. Application open on January 22, 2024, through March 29, 2024.

  • Available annually to third- and fourth-year medical students attending any Texas medical school.
  • Exhibit outstanding academic achievements and strong leadership skills.
  • Demonstrate interest in serving medically underserved populations in Texas.
  • Apply online via the Lone Star Caucus (when available).

Michael O'Malley, MD Memorial Scholarship

  • TMA’s Young Physician Section(YPS) offers scholarships to a rural high school senior pursuing a degree in the field of medicine.
  • $1,000 scholarship awarded annually to help students achieve their goal of becoming a physician.
